WaterBANK Unit #1 in Action

Ara, Bihar | February 24, 2025 – A groundbreaking initiative aimed at tackling water scarcity through a sustainable barter-based economy was initiated in Bihar’s Ara district with the inauguration of the first ever WaterBANK unit in Pakri village of Dumaria Panchayat. The BarterWATER initiative, officiated by Sahpur MLA, introduces an innovative model fostering community-driven nature-centric development of the village. This pilot was supported by PanIIT based initiatives WHEELS Global Foundation (WGF), and WIN Foundations. This WaterBANK unit is energised by HUSK Power Suystems. The installation of the unit is done by VAS Bros. Enterprises Private Limited.

What is BarterWATER Mission?

The mission aligns with the United Nations Decade for Action Agenda (2018-2028) to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030), emphasising water as a critical element of sustainable development. Under the initiative, individuals use one Rainbow credit to vend per litre of drinking water from installed WaterBANK Unit, which can also be redeemed for essential nature-based goods and services, thereby promoting responsible water use at the grassroots level.

How does BarterWATER functions?

Households, on a daily basis, can avail 20 liters of Arsenic-free, safe and healthy drinking water from WaterBANK unit, using BarterWATER card. As villagers perform SDG-aligned activities, they are granted RAINBOW credits that they can redeem for a specific amount of clean drinking water. The bartering exchange offers households the ability to install bamboo-based drainage cleaning systems to become net-zero, allowing them to earn up to 1,000 liters of clean drinking water. Communities have taken up many locally needed social impact initiatives, such as setting up a unique bamboo garbage bin solution – separating plastic, e-waste, paper, glass, and kitchen waste – for more RAINBOW credits in return.

BarterExchange First Offering

  • 1,000 Rainbow credits are being offered for investments in NetZero gray-water discharge infrastructure, at household level.
  • 1,000 Rainbow credits can be exchanged for constructing a bamboo bin for plastic waste collection, integrated with glass, paper, food, and other waste separately.
  • 1,000 Rainbow credits can be redeemed for a Bamboo chair.
Such initiative in the region will add great value to the sustainable development of the rural areas
